Up from Slavery: the Struggles and Triomphs

UP FROM SLAVERY: THE STRUGGLES AND TRIOMPHS OF BOOKER T. WASHINGTON IN A DIVIDED AMERICA Even though slavery has been abolished in the United States for decades now, the stories from the people who lived in the period when slavery was still practiced and experienced the period after the abolishment, are still alive today. The experiences Booker T. Washington tells about in Up From Slavery range from haunting to inspirational, and give a clear view on the South of the US post-Civil War from the eyes of a black man. Even though Booker T.Washington endured horrible circumstances during slavery, Washington sets an example for black people of the perseverance to succeed in the US and to overcome all obstacles. The autobiographical story in Up From Slavery starts with introducing Washington’s life on the plantation where he worked. As he phrases it himself: â€Å"[his] life had its beginnings in the midst of the most miserable, desolate, and discouraging surroundings† (Washin gton 870). These surroundings, combined with devastatingly hard labor, created an environment with no apparent end in sight, and no hope of changing the situation. This helplessness is expressed by Washington, as he sees other boys and girls his age going to school. Due to the situation in the US at the time, there were no chances at all of Washington getting into school, or as he calls it: â€Å"paradise† (Washington 872). When this no-escape-possible situation ends –when slavery is abolished– and Washington hears about a school for black people, he immediately is determined to go to the school. His persistence is recognized by the school board and he gets accepted in the school, which leads to Washington excelling in school. When he began delivering his first speeches years later, he developed himself as a leading figure, who was fighting to help black people and other minorities to grow out of the place they have been kept in for years, and advance themselves. For black people, often in circumstances not dealt with by whites, having Washington as an example as someone who defeated his personal enemies by escaping his situation, was of grave importance. To actually see someone who has climbed to the top, coming from horrible circumstances, could inspire a next generation to work as hard as Washington did.To let other black people get to the place Washington is, he not only talks about education, he also talks about always being friendly to white people. During a speech at the Atlanta Exposition in 1895, Washington talks about significance of finding allies: To those of my race who depend on bettering their condition in a foreign land or who underestimate the importance of cultivating friendly relations with the Southern white man, who is their next-door neighbor, I would say: â€Å"Cast down your bucket where you are†Ã¢â‚¬â€œcast it down in making friends in every manly way of the people of all races by whom we are surrounded. Washi ngton 888) By sending this message to people of every color and casting down ones bucket, Washington said that a society where black people could work themselves to the same level as whites could be created. This approach to overcoming the racial issues between black and whites did lead to criticism, with them saying that Washington was keeping discrimination in place by not addressing it fully. Especially W. E. B.Du Bois was critical of Washington’s ideas, stating that â€Å"[Washington’s] program asked blacks to give up political power, insistence on civil rights, and higher education for Negro youth† (Gibson). And while Washington did play down some issues, one must not forget the time Washington was living in, and that his speeches even without those issues more assertive leaders like Du Bois were rooting for, were controversial to many Southern white people. Booker T. Washington pushed aside the force of the Southern whites wanting to hold black people back and overcame his obstacles.Coming from an enslaved and poor position, educating and working himself up to a high position, Washington was and still is an inspiration to all people, but especially for those who are in the position he was in. He gave hope to the people that needed it most, and his words still continue to do so. WORKS CITED Gibson, Robert A. Booker T. Washington and W. E. B. Du Bois: The Problem of Negro Leadership. My Leadership Capabilities

According to me, leadership is a quality of an individual that makes him stand beyond the crowd. Leadership is all about organizing a group of people, understanding them, monitoring them, identifying & allocating them desired role, getting the best work done out of them & lastly reward them. The main objective of the leader is to get the best out of his team in order to meet the goals of an organization. Perhaps different leaders have different methodology but their objective has always been same. Our group mutually agreed on the following skills which we strongly believe a leader should perceive. 1. Interpersonal Skills: It includes the positive attitude, manners, gestures & behavior of a good leader. A good leader should use these interpersonal skills to solve the conflicts in the group & to maintain peace & discipline in the organization. 2. Communication skills: A good leader demonstrates communication skills as being a good listener & speaker. There should n’t be communication barrier between a leader & his subordinates. The meaning of words should be easily understood by both leader & the teammates in order to carry the workflow smoothly. 3. Relationships: Trust is the base of each & every relationship. In order to maintain a good relationship a leader should first understand needs of his teammates which will help him to allocate suitable role to that individual. A good leader should associate with his subordinates; develop the interpersonal relationships & feeling of belongingness. 4. Motivation: A good leader should always ignite the fire in his subordinates in order to meet the desired goal & objective of the organization.Leaders are responsible for building confidence in their teams & setting an example of their own in order to inspire their team. 5. Time management: â€Å"TIME IS AN ETERNITY† says SHIV KHERA. Time is the most vital factor in life; a good leader should always set an example of utilizing the given time & giving the best out of it. 6. Decision maker: Making the right decision at the right time is the most vital characteristics of a good leader. Keeping in mind the mission & vision of an organization, being loyal & ethical; decisions should be made by a leader in order to meet the goals of an organization. 7.Constructive feedback: It’s very important for a good leader to provide his team with constructive feedback from time to time. Correct feedback helps teammates for future improvements & enhancements. After the feedback which I got from my team mates, I was a bit surprised & stunned as well, because I got to know my strengths & weaknesses more precisely also the areas where I need to improve. Considering interpersonal skill, my group feels I am very good at it. One of my team mates told me he just adores my greeting style like every morning I greet them wishing good morning & keeping a smile on my face. They told me this attitude of mine just drives them to a good start in the morning. Also they liked my positive attitude towards work which motivates them to complete their assignment within the given time limit. They explained me this point giving an example of when we were allocated a task to be completed within short span of time I was the first to take the initiative of being a team leader & taking responsibility on my shoulder, this positive attitude of mine motivated them & we manage to complete the task within the time limit giving the best out of us.Regarding communication skill my group feels that I am excellent at it, I completely agree with them. That’s probably because I have a very smooth communication with them , my gesture, body language, the way I speak is easily understood by them & also the vice versa is true. They also praised me for my excellent listening skills perhaps according to me that’s the most crucial factor a good leader should posses, I strongl y believe in order to be a good speaker you first need to be a very good listener. My group feels I am good at maintaining relationships. One of my team mates told me he was very much surprised to notice my presence in his surprise birthday party. I have always maintained good relations with my team mates not only in the meetings or in the office but also beyond the office walls. Understanding my teammate’s needs has always been first on my priority list; it helps me in order to assign a particular task to the subordinate well suited for that task. It also helps me in making decisions to reward & promote my teammates.Maintaining a good relationship with your team helps in building trust in your team which ultimately results in best work out of your team. Also it’s very vital to maintain relationship with your teammates keeping in mind they don’t take it for granted perhaps then as a leader you won’t be able to get best out of them. My group feels I am good at motivating them in order to make them complete the assigned work in time. I strongly feel that a good leader should have motivational factor in abundance in order to motivate his team.My teammates told me they get very much motivated by the words I use when I am delivering speech. One of my teammates was nervous & frustrated because of the work load I told him about my own experience of life how I faced ups & downs in my life but every time keeping a smile on my face I had enjoyed those phase which brought smile on his face & he assured me hence forth whenever he shall be feeling low he will remember my experience & will go back to work & will deliver the best out of it.He had also thanked me publicly for the motivation I gave him. A good leader should always value the time because it’s well said ‘if you don’t value the time wont value you. ’ Perhaps this is where I need to improve a lot, my group feels that I am average in time management; I whole heartedly welcome their criticism. I have been told by my group that at time I am not punctual in the meetings, well I don’t blame them but for sure I will rectify it keeping in mind as a leader I need to set an example for them that has to be excellent & not just fair or average. My group feels I am good at making decisions, I agree to them because I have taken few decisions which were ironical to them but later on it proved to be beneficial to the organization. Perhaps keeping in mind the goals & setting ethical standards I need to improve in making decisions. When it comes to giving feedback I know I am a bit reserved because I don’t want to hurt anybody’s emotions or ethics. That’s why my group feels I am poor at giving feedbacks.A good leader should always give accurate feedback to his subordinates it helps them to improve in future also it furnish them with the compliments & rewards they get from the feedbacks which b uilds their confidence level. A good leader should always be fair in giving feedback this is where I need to improve a lot because my feedbacks are always positive to all my team mates even if their work is not appropriate which hinders them to learn & improve in future.I strongly believe that life is a learning process & as a good leader I have always learn from whatever came on my way whether it’s a compliment or it’s a criticism. From the feedbacks I have learned that I need to be fair in giving feedbacks, I need to manage time well & I need to lead my team in a correct path which leads to achieving the desire goals & objectives of our organization.List of References 1. Moreover, the concept of discourse is being employed widely as an instrument of analysis as far as cultural communication is concerned. Based on the cultural discourse, this is the point in which individuals are capable of negotiating, make sense of and practice culture (Holliday 2013). It is believed tat under these circumstances; issues about culture are well build, new grammar of culture practiced and understanding of cosmopolitan world achieved (Holliday 2013). I am Ukrainian, but Ive lived in England for 5 years. My own cultural development was based on three vey essential approach and practices I had to develop. The English culture I was living in was well established and dominant to other minorities like me. To begin with, I had to accept the fact that majority of the established theories of culture within the social setting I was living in was derived from western sources (Holliday 2013). This was also supplemented by the fact England is a major driving force in the current global politics, operating from a position of cultural economic and political dominance in relation to the rest of the world (Holliday 2013). For elaborate cultural development, living in England for five years was enough for me to adapt to the English culture of communication and lifestyle. Interaction with students who are England native speakers helped me adapt to English accent and mode of living. Improved grammar and pronunciation of terms are some of the key lessons I leant. The transition from Ukrainian-born to adapted English culture was not easy, but persistence and more communication interaction made it possible. By acknowledging that there is cultural diversity, it is important to note that before adapting to foreign cultural practices, one has to be

Additionally, they are considered to be the major widespread and high cost diseases that most nations have to deal with. However, it is important for citizens to take the initiative in order to prevent these particular diseases. Moreover, another study carried out by Karasek (1996) reported that American Indian and natives from Alaska have reported high percentage of premature deaths as a result of heart diseases as compared to other ethnic or racial groups in the United States of America. It is important to note that stroke and other forms of heart diseases are easier to prevent rather than to treat. The relationship between Human and Nature Dissertation

The relationship between Human and Nature - Dissertation Example The Eastern and Western architecture are largely influenced by the religions dominant in both regions. Western religions, which include Christianity, Judaism, and Islam, as well as Greek and Roman Empire influences, apply their beliefs based on congregated prayer where the community usually participates in praise and other religious rituals (Cooler, n.d). Such practice often calls for space where a congregation can gather and listen to teachings from religious leaders. In effect, a speaker would have to face the followers in order to be seen and heard. The speaker would therefore have to be situated at the front of a space, not at its centre because those behind may not be able to hear him and may not be able to participate fully in the religious activity (Cooler, n.d). A rectangular space with a podium at one end may therefore serve better purposes for worship within the western religious setting. While the circular forms of worship sites as in the formations seen at the Stonehenge, these sites did not last as a main forms of worship sites (Cooler, n.d). Japanese architecture The impact of Japanese architecture to architecture in general is very much significant. It includes both religious and non-religious tones and themes. For a long time, Japanese architecture has mostly been based on Chinese influence (World Translation Center, 2014). However, differences between their styles have been noted throughout the years, with a significant difference being that in Japanese architecture, people usually sat on the floor, with Chinese architecture including chairs to sit on.

Diversity The evolution of McDonald’s Corporation toward diversity as a business objective began in the late 1970’s, when the corporation officially  established an Affirmative Action Department, which today is known as the Diversity Initiative Department (Anonymous, 2005). Numerous factors can affect the four major functions of management; this section will focus on how diversity can affect planning, organizing, leading and controlling within the McDonalds Corporation. Diversity in the workplace is more than a person’s race or ethnic background it also includes personality, gender, education, position in the organization, etc. The major obstacle for McDonald’s management continues to be age, gender, ethnic background and education. Diversity management involves a three-stage process: (Tetteh, 2014) †¢Identification Stage †¢Implementation Stage †¢Maintenance Stage McDonald’s management must identify where the diversity mixture is and decided on the appropriate action to ensure workplace harmony and productivity. This will be accomplished through proper training and communication with all employees. Learning to effectively communicate with the various groups within each location will be very important to the success of the team within each restaurant. Implementing effective processes that ensure each diverse group is accommodated is crucial to the process. McDonalds as a corporation does a great job helping and engaging their management and employee’s to ensure proper implementation by offering education and career development seminars, various gender based seminars, second language courses etc. Maintain and improving these processes will ensure that McDonald’s stays current and relevant to the groups each manager has identified within their department. McDonald’s continually re-evaluates its initiatives to ensure they are in line with their business and current employee base. McDonalds ensures diversity is properly managed within their organization by including diversity in the business planning process. This allows the company and its managers to treat diversity as an initiative rather than a program; it’s naturally incorporated into the business plan (Anonymous, 2005). Ethics When it comes the Functions of Management, you must condsider which parts may be corrupted by ethical issues. Two areas that maybe prone to be affected  are the Leading and Organizing Funtions. In building a dynamic organization you must find a diverse group of people, with different ethical baskgrouds, to fill the different postions in it. You would also want to get them up to speed with you organizations ethical views. If you take a company like McDonald’s you can find out what they do to ensure this. Now McDonalds is committed to conducting business ethically and in compliance with the letter and spirit of the law. This commitment is reflected in McDonalds Values. Inherent in each value is our commitment to be ethical, truthful and dependable and this is reflected through their Standards of Business Conduct, which serves as a guide to making good decisions and conducting business ethically. Each year McDonalds employees are required to re-certify that they have read and will abide by the standards that McDonalds has set through the Standards of Business Conduct. Employees complete regular training on the Standards, anti-bribery laws, and various other laws, regulations and company-specific policies. McDonalds and its employees in all countries must comply with the U.S. Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (McDonalds: Standards Of Business Conduct For Employees, n.d.). Management Essay Example for Free

Management Essay The management functions of planning, organizing, leading, and controlling Management is the attainment of organizational goals in an effective and efficient manner through planning, organizing, leading and controlling organizational resources. The success of an organization is determined by four essential functions of management: controlling, leading, organizing, and planning. Controlling involves directing and monitoring the progress of employees. Controlling employees and the work environment helps employees to stay focused on goals set by the management. Management must provide superior leadership skills by making their presence known in the work environment. Employees have a basic need of having contact on a daily basis with management. By leading managers motivate their employees and increase efficiency. Management makes an organization successful by organizing all aspects of business which would include business functions; creating organizational charts, setting goals, creating an action plan, and figuring out the logistics to make sure goals are achieved. Management must use the function of control to stabilize employee performance and the work environment. Control is always viewed as a negative term because employees think of being restricted. However, controls are placed for the benefit of everyone, without a controlled organization there would be chaos. Within my organization, management maintains control by setting clear guidelines each employee must obey. Managers expect people in an organization to change their behavior in response to control (Erven, 1994). Since my colleagues and I work as independent contractors everyone has the power to choose their own schedule. Management controls the environment by making everyone adhere to the set schedule by 75% or better. When contractors meet their commitment, they are rewarded with a pay incentive. Prior to this policy being enforced, performance was lower, since this control has been in place performance has increased dramatically. Leading Management is expected exercise the function of leading in order for the organization to meet their goals. Leading is an essential function of management because it helps management direct employees to focus on the big picture. Typically management will focus on increasing productivity to improve cost efficiency. In order to improve productivity, employees need direction and motivation from management. At my organization, employees are paid based on commission. Management provides employees with information about busier working hours so that employees have the opportunity to maximize their efforts on those hours. At the end of the day, management wants the needs of the customers to be met as well as employees to be satisfied with their compensation. Organizing Organizing is a critical component of good management, because everything within the organization is depending on the organizational skills of the management. Management is primarily responsible for organizing resources in order for goals to be met (Bateman Snell, 2007). Within the organization, management must create an organizational chart which would describe the business function and responsibility of each person on that chart. Management would assume responsibility for all logistics to be in place to assist their employees of meeting their goals. In my organization, a critical component of organizing involves having all of the necessary technology functioning properly since business is conducted by phone and internet. On a daily basis the management has to make sure the phone routing system is functioning properly as well as their websites. Occasionally technical problems occur, and they must be handled immediately or else business will suffer if the necessary technology is not available. Planning Planning is essential component to the other three functions of management running smoothly. Planning involves the management team identifying goals and objectives within the organization. Once goals are mapped out, management must work together to analyze the current state of the organization and make a plan of action to implement immediate changes. In order to plan successfully, management must anticipate circumstances they could be affected by. Based on goals, objectives, and their forecast into the future they can begin to create business strategies. The management in my organization focuses on increasing the volume of customers. When the volume of customers drops, promotions occur more often to lure customers in. In order to prepare for unthinkable situations such as a drop in business management must work within other departments to develop contingency plans when business is not going as planned. The roles and responsibilities managers have within an organization. There are managers in every profession – it is not a standalone field. For those of us who become managers, we reach a stage in our career progression where we apply for roles which have management responsibilities. We then need to build our managerial experience and gain the knowledge and skills to enable us to carry out the role effectively. As a manager, there are many responsibilities must follow. Managers take on an essential responsibility for communication. Particularly with the pace of change, it ismore important than ever to keep employees informed of what’s going on. In performing the informational role, managers are essentially two-way information conduits. Managers must keep employees informed of all things that affect their work and provide information to their organisation (and, often, outside their organisation) about what the team is doing. To undertake PDRs with staff. Through the PDR process, to engage in the setting of objectives in order to assist in the monitoring of performance and the development of the individual. To assess the training and development needs of staff to ensure that they are adequately supported in relation to their work responsibilities. Managers are also required to ensure that staff have completed the relevant mandatory training for their role. To ensure appropriate management systems and procedures are in place to meet your health and safety duties. You will find your responsibilities contained in the University’s Health and Safety policy. You are required to ensure appropriate risk assessments are carried out in respect of significant hazards and safety inspections. To apply the University’s Equal Opportunities Policy. Line managers are responsible for maintaining a working environment that is free of discrimination, harassment, victimisation and bullying. In applying the Universities Equal Opportunities Policy and associated training, line managers have an important role in ensuring that no person associated with MMU receives less favorable treatment on the grounds of: gender, race or ethnic origin, nationality, disability, sexual orientation, social background or for any other identifiable discriminatory cause. There will be other responsibilities for you dependent on your managerial level within the University. You should speak to your own manager if you need to clarify any of these.

Design Specifications for Engineering Project

Design Specifications for Engineering Project Introduction For large development projects, defining the problem becomes the development of design specifications. Typically, development project are complex, involving a number of people from different disciplines working toward the same goal. This chapter discusses the following topic that describe the process and the importance of developing design specification: Specifications of a Design General Description Specification of Material Circuit Simulation Specification Cost Specification 3.1. Specifications of a Design Specifications are nothing more than a formal document listing the requirements of a project. The opinion of the project is to energy harvesting through flooring, which is built with piezoelectric technology, the electrical energy created by the weight of human footsteps walking around from place to place, which is caught by floor piezoelectric sensors and get compressed and decompressed, then energy is stored and utilized as a power source. The figure (x) here represent the structure of the energy harvesting design in the form of blocks. 3.2. General Description The author has tried to evaluate when a full amount of weight is sensed by the piezoelectric sensors mounted on a platform, and the voltages which generated will be stored in the Battery. The Battery which is charged, further connected to the Mobile Charging Circuit board as appliances. Board consists a USB point, where users may connect cables to charge a mobile phone from the battery charged. The arrangement also consists a 12-volt power supply adapter with voltage regulator, which will provide to the monitoring circuit based on a microcontroller to monitor the output voltage which generated across the sensors using potential divider physics. The level of a voltage generated and whenever human walks through platform the count of the footsteps is to be recorded and displayed on the LCD. LEDs require DC supply to operate. A string of LEDs is mounted below the platform (floor) when the voltage generated by the weight of human footsteps the LEDs will be blink through the microcontroller circuit. Consequently, the voltage which generated using energy harvesting device Piezoelectric Power Generation System is can be utilized within different appliances; mobile charging, street or corridor lighting, bus or airports station lighting, nightclubs, rural areas, charging technologies for electric vehicles, etc. The more power could be generated using the equivalent technique; researchers are investigating in piezoelectricity for bigger designs. 3.3. Specification of Material The minimum requirements of materials to build an energy harvesting device is illustrated below; Statement Of Material Component Name significance Quantity Resistors [ÃŽÂ ©] 10K 5 2.2K 1 100K 1 330K 2 10K POT. 1 Capacitors 10 uF/63V 2 33 PF 2 470 uF/35V 1 Integrated Circuits ATMEGA 328 1 7805 2 IC Bases 8-PIN 1 Transistor BC 547 (NPN) 1 Diodes IN4007 2 Bridge Diode 2 Miscellaneous Piezoelectric Sensor 8 Crystal 16MHz 1 LCD 16ÃÆ'-2 1 Burge Strip 16 Pin-male 1 LED Strip 1 RED LED 3 2-Pin Push Button 1 USB CONNECTOR 1 PCB CONNECTOR 2-Pin 1 Weighing Machine Plate 1 12 Volt Adaptor 1 USB Wire 1 Lead Acid Rechargeable Battery 12 Volt Printed Circuit Board Soldering Wire Connecting Wire 3.4. Circuit Simulation Specification The figure (x), show the schematic diagram for Piezoelectric Power Generation System Utilizing of Human Footsteps. The schematic diagram is constructed through circuit simulation software; Proteus Design Suite, which is an Electronic Design Automation tool including schematic capture and PCB layout modules. circuit simulators allow the circuit designer to draw a circuit schematic and simulate circuit operation on a personal computer. Circuit simulators provide a very quick and easy way to evaluate a particular design concept without using expensive test equipment or having to procure parts and assemble a breadboard. The components short-term justifications of the system are specified below and more in details will found in the further chapter. Resistor (R) The circuit diagram of the device has 10 resistors [ÃŽÂ ©] and that having different values which 10K, 2.2K, 100K, 330K, and 10K POT. The requirement of this resistor in the circuit is to create specified values of the current and voltage. So, its used to oppose an electric current by producing a voltage drop between its terminals in proportion to the current. Capacitor (C) The function of the capacitor is to store power in form of an electric field and is called as a ceramic disc with some features like high stability. The circuit of a device has been provided with five capacitors with a value of 10 uF/63V, 33 PF, and 470 uF/35V. And to operate the crystal its specified frequency capacitor is used in circuits. Transistors A transistor is a device which is used to make a change in large output with respect to the small input applied to it. In a circuit, 3 terminals BJT (bipolar junction transistor) is used. By the use of the transistor, control large signal at another pair by just applying small input at another pair. Also, it can be used as a switch with the help of small input current as it is a current control device. IC-Regulator IC is an integrated circuit used in various applications. In timing device product used 7805 IC as a 5v voltage regulator. Sometimes there is a voltage fluctuation and so it could not get fixed output voltage. So this 7805 IC provides regulated power supply. The main advantage of this IC is to give constant output voltage even there is a variation in input. Also, current limiting protection is provided in IC itself and for other parts of the circuit as well. Crystal Oscillators Crystal Oscillator is a device that used in electrical circuits in order to create an electrical signal with an accurate frequency. The need for the frequency of the circuit is to keep the path of the time in quartz and provide a stable signal for the device. Seven Segments Display Seven segments display (LCD) is a device that utilized for displaying the status of the circuit. The features of the seven segments display are that it operates in low current. The display will show the status of the device; Level of the voltage generated, and whenever human walks through platform the count of the footsteps is recorded and displayed. Piezoelectric Sensors Piezoelectric Sensors also a device, utilize to generate the electrical energy converting different sources. (E.g. Kinetic, Mechanical energy). When a force is applied on a piezo material, a charge is generated. These devices consist an 8 Piezoelectric Sensors which mounted below the platform and convert the human footstep energy into electrical energy. 3.5. Cost Specification This section is one of the most important section and often that is overlooked. This section determines the potential for the financial success of the project. when considering all the technical details, its easy to overlook that the cost of development and the manufacturing cost are crucial to the project success. As such, they must be identified as part of the specification in a compact statement. After research of components required to harvesting the Piezoelectric Power Generation System Utilizing of Human Footsteps, it is expected to fall within the  £90 budget. With research the specifications required for the key component excluding postage. Equipment that will be required within the budget includes; Resistor (R), Capacitor (C), Transistors, IC-Regulator, Crystal Oscillators, Seven Segments Display and Piezoelectric Sensors. However, these are all relatively low cost. Facilities required to develop the project including software are available at no costs for the schematic circuit design. Summary Having completed the design specification, let us note what has been accomplished and the steps that achieve those accomplishments. The following steps can be used as guideline for completing the design specification in any project; Divide the design problem into smaller modules. complete a block diagram. Do research on area relating to each design problem. gather more information. Develop a cost budget. Apply creative thinking! Complete a schematic design. The blank pieces of paper at the beginning of the chapter now have many schematic symbols with their associated circuit traces. The next step involves the selection of the physical components and breadboarding.

Stock Portfolio :: essays papers

Stock Portfolio When setting up a stock portfolio there are things one should look into. First off, one should know what is currently happening, not only in the stock market, but in the economy as well. Researching stock indexes such as â€Å"The Dow† and the â€Å"S&P 500† will give you general stock performance. The Dow Jones Industrial Average only tracks 30 large industrial firms in hopes of getting a sense of where the market is heading. The S&P 500, on the other hand, tracks 500 stocks which may give the investor a better overall picture of where the market is going. Which ever the investor may choose to use, the idea is to find out whether stock prices are going up or down. Also important to know is state of the economy. Certain stocks tend to perform better or worse depending on the state of the economy. Knowing which stocks tend to perform well at a given state will help the investor choose which type of stock is best for the given conditions. With that, it is time for the investor set a goal. Is the goal that of short or long term success? Is there a specific rate of return you wish to achieve? Or do you simply wish to come out ahead? Once the goals are put into place it is time for investment strategies. The investors goals will be key in helping plan the strategies for the investor. Now that there are goals in place, it is now time to look at the many investment strategies that will help accomplish the set goals. One of these strategies is known as the buy-and hold-strategy. This strategy involves the investor to purchase a stock and hold on to this stock for many years in hopes that over time the stock price will increase. This method doesn’t require much timing of the market therefore is much less stressful making it a very desirable method. The opposite strategy is known as short term trading. This requires much attention to be paid to the â€Å"Price† and â€Å"Volume† of the stock, also knowing whether the stock is on an upward or downward trend. Another common strategy is known as short selling. This involves borrowing a stock from a broker at a given price and selling it, in hopes that the stock price will drop from the original price.

Power Markets and Electricity Derivatives :: essays research papers

Since the early ‘90s, the electrical energy sector has undergone profound and dramatic changes. More and more countries moved towards the deregulation of their energy sectors, from a regulated and monopolistic industry to one were the market forces of supply and demand determine the unit price of electricity. The first case of energy sector deregulation in Europe was recorded when the United Kingdom with the Electricity Act of 1990 created the Electricity Pool for England and Wales. Norway soon followed suit (Norwegian Energy Act of 1991) and set up the Norwegian Pool in 1993, which eventually became the Nord Pool in 1996. At the same year, the European Union issued its Electricity Directive (Directive 96/92/EC) according to which the electricity markets of all EU countries should be open for competition by 2003, with the exceptions of Greece and Ireland which were granted a one year extension [13]. Deregulating a country’s energy sector is a complicated and difficult task. The typical power utility operation is divided into three main functions: electricity generation, its transmission over the power grid and finally the distribution to the end users. Deregulation stipulates that all three functions should be open to competition. In particular, new and existing power generation utilities/companies (GenComs) should be able to compete with each other at a wholesale level. For this to be possible though, the access to the power grid should be offered with the same terms to all players. The only way to avoid any bias or conflict of interest is hence to ensure that the generation, transmission and distribution of electricity are either run by different companies or under different management (unbundling). Furthermore, the electricity distribution sector may also be segmented for different geographical areas, (DisComs). The actual trading of electricity, either the physical as set itself or financial products on it, is organized and takes place in a formal power exchange, or Pool [13]. The passage from a regulated to a deregulated power industry is seen in Figures 1 and 2. Deregulation of the energy sector is all the more challenging due to the particular characteristics of electricity that differentiate it from other traded commodities; namely limited storability and transportability. Electrical energy cannot be stored after it has been produced, except in the case of hydroplants where electricity is notionally stored indirectly in the form of the water kept in the reservoirs. Even in this case though, high demand can be satisfied for a limited time only, while the use of larger in size and/or number reservoirs is either unfeasible or uneconomical.

Economic and Social Effects of Prohibition Essay examples -- history

Economic and Social Effects of Prohibition There are many ways in which prohibition of alcohol consumption in the United States of America, damaged the very economic and social aspects of American culture, that it was designed to heal. â€Å"Prohibition did not achieve its goals. Instead, it added to the problems it was intended to solve.† On 16th January 1920, one of the most common personal habits and customs of American society came to a halt. The eighteenth amendment was implemented, making all importing, exporting, transporting, selling and manufacturing of intoxicating liquors absolutely prohibited. This law was created in the hope of achieving the reduction of alcohol consumption, which in turn would reduce: crime, poverty, death rates, and improve both the economy, and the quality of life for all Americans. These goals were far from achieved. The prohibition amendment of the 1920's was ineffective because it was unenforceable. Instead, it caused various social problems such as: the explosive growth of organized crime, increased liquor consumption, massive murder rates and corruption among city officials. Prohibition also hurt the economy because the government wasn’t collecting taxes on the mu lti-billion dollar a year industry. One of the main reasons that prohibition failed, was because it was difficult to control the mass flow of illegal liquor from various countries, mainly Canada. â€Å"Bootleggers smuggled liquor from oversees and Canada, stole it from government warehouses, and produced their own.† The newly established Federal Prohibition Bureau had only 1,550 agents, and â€Å"with 18,700 miles of vast and virtually unpoliceable coastline, it was clearly impossible to prevent immense quantities of liquor from entering the country.† Not even 5% of smuggled liquor was ever actually captured and seized from the hands of the bootleggers. Bootlegging had become a very competitive and lucrative market with the adaptation of prohibition. This illegal underground economy fell into the hands of organized gangs who over powered most of the authorities. Most of these gangsters, secured their businesses by bribing an immense number of city officials. Mainly government agents and people with high political status such as: Mayors, Judges, Police Chiefs, Senators and Governors, found the ir names on gangsters payroll. To some surprise, the consumption ... ...ederal officers to enforce the prohibition law. Many of those officers found themselves in the midst of the exchange of dirty money between the bootleggers and themselves. Tax dollars were also spent on prosecuting bootleggers who got captured. Millions of dollars annually were spent convicting and keeping the prisoners in jails. Other economic problems were that citizens found themselves â€Å"drinking away† their pay cheques. These economic problems resulted in the government not taking in as much money as they could have, and spending money in areas that could have been avoided, if prohibition hadn’t existed in the first place. It was apparent that Prohibition didn’t achieve its goals, instead, it added to the existing economic and social problems, as well as creating new problems that would be prominent in today’s society. Organized crime grew into an empire, disrespect for the law grew, the per capita consumption of alcohol increased dramatically, city officials fell to gangsters, and the government lost money. It is obvious that prohibition was a miserable failure from all points of view. Reasonable measures were not taken to enforce the laws, so they were practically ignored.

Ethics implications of production facilities

Being in a rural location, Facility A has ethics implication if it would provide tax incentives and exempted restrictions to a large and hi-tech firm (Herley Industries 2007).   The local population may demonstrate rallies and lobbying that would gradually lead to Manychip having equal-footing with similar companies.   Manychip must verify if the location provides incentives for manufacturing in equal footing rather than arbitrarily. When the firm decided to locate in Facility B, it will expose its labor practices to international organizations due to practice of child labor.   Although cost efficient, Manychip will confront a whole new operating environment and culture that can undermine its quality and efficiency derived in developed countries.   Manychip must identify if laborers in this facility are qualified to meet their present quality criteria, potential reduction in value from the market when identified as using child labor and value-added in tariff-free distribution. Similar essay: Disadvantages of Ethical Business Practices In Facility C, Manychip can acquire its quality standards however with higher labor costs, tax and restrictions.   The company’s margin can be narrowed which can affect funding in its research and development.   On the other hand, Manychip has ample experience in operating in metropolitan environments and local regulations that it can used to minimize business risk. There are three location analysis techniques to aid Manychip in choosing the best alternative; namely, location factor rating, center of gravity and load-distance (Bose 2002).   Load factor rating is a technique that closely resembles location evaluation above.   The difference is that it attached weights to location factor totaling to 100% (e.g. labor pool and climate, proximity to suppliers, wage rates, community environment, etc.) depending on their important to a company (i.e. wage rates = 30%). The location that will be chose is the one that has the highest rank.   The second and third technique focus on providing the minimum transportation costs to a firm.   For example, center of gravity computes for straight-line coordinates where the company must locate its facility.   In contrast, load-distance combines the aspect of load where the location facility will be appraised based on its capacity to offer minimum load and minimum distance.   This technique will also compute specific coordinates where the firm will construct its facility. Working with vulnerable populations can be very stressful

I find that keeping with a certain routine has a calming offspring on my daily life. It likewise creates a understanding of security and reliability inwardly my relationships with co-workers and nodes. This is important as inter soulal relationships should non become an additional source of stress, still instead an integral part of team-building deep down an organisation. I would both be a instruct and find a mentor and with reciprocal understanding and direction toward a super acid goal of doing what is best for the common good, my co-workers and I would alleviate from each one opposite work through our similar stresses.I would also be kind but strong with clients and help in whatsoever counselling that is required without taking any clients succeeder or relapse as a personal failure or conversely a thing that I created or else than initiated. I think it is very nerve-racking to believe that one has total big businessman to change other(a)s, as this creates a sense of being that is unrealistic.I will help when I can and do my best to help others in achieving their goals and non take my experiences at work with me when I exit the opening to go home. I will employ my personal time to refresh for the side by side(p) work day.2. What specific approaches would you take with your clients?I believe that this depends on the individual clients goals and particular give of functioning. Sometimes, it is essential to undertake crisis stabilization and make authoritative that a client is not difference to harm him or herself. This is the primary snap and sometimes demands one to restrain and process a doctor in medication regulation to get the client to a point to initiate the next measure in treatment.Identification of issues and maintenance of levels of functioning and change magnitude self-efficacy in a clients behavior is demand in a secondary stage approach to client management.Management on a tertiary stage would include help with i ndividual growth and development to abet each person to becoming as healthy as possible and at the highest level of functioning possible. At this point, goal-setting and multitude therapy would be a good approach.3. Do you believe that there are any clients that you would not be able to efficaciously care for?No, I am a firm believer of Carl Rogers person-centered therapy and the motivation to serve well others with unconditional positive regard. As a Humanist, I believe that each person should help others achieve what goals they set for themselves and to baulk personal judgment on each individuals sense of person, reality, and future. Since I waive all judgment as a person of this school of thought, I do not foresee having any person that I cannot properly deal with.If for some strange, individual reason, I find myself unable to avail a client properly, I would ethically and without sense of failure ask a colleague for assistance. I do manage my limitations and think that only case choke off would ever be an issue. I need to have enough time to gift to each of my clients and would clearly address any issues with overload or any other issue promptly and professionally.

Broad History of Culinary Arts

Renita Thornton Chef Jerome culinary 1010 18 February 2013A Broad History of the Culinary Arts creationCulinary liberal machinations describe the art involving the facility and dressdness of foods. Culinary artists are usu totallyy obligated for preparing meals skillfully, which implies that the food made is appealing to the eye and the palate. The culinary arts history dates back from 1800s, when the source check in Boston involved in didactics the art of planning became discovered. Various changes have interpreted place in the culinary arts from the husking time to the present. For instance, assorted cookery methods are unceasingly being discovered. Although cooking was once taken as a crime syndicate chore supposed to be carried out by wo musical compositionpower as men worked in the field, it has presently substantial and has become a worlds question and highly attracting both men and women due to its susceptibility to provide incomes. Today, cooking is non jus t a hobby but overly a job to the American concourse. In this paper, I will discuss the evolution of the culinary arts commencing in the prehistoric times to the present. The history of culinary arts dates back to 1800s, a time when the first cooking school became established in Boston. The cooking school established in Boston taught students how to prepare diametrical foods and prepared them on passing noesis to others. The Boston cooking school was a forefront contributor in the creativeness of culinary professionals alwaysywhere. However, to a greater extent schools began popping up, and up to now, there are intimately 21,000 universities teaching culinary arts programs (Toussaint-Samat 29). Apart from the huge contribution of Boston cooking school, another commodious contributor to the early culinary arts is Fannie sexual morality book on American culinary arts and recipes. This book became published in 1896 it became the first ever official cookbook in America. During th e time, the book became highly demanded since every household demanded the book as it was determine and used in every days life. This original book of cooking is still utilized in the present age as a reference in the cooking profession (Glazer 103). The bordering phase involving the history of culinary arts describes the culinary arts being taken to the idiot box, in 1946, where the bewilder of American cuisine also known as James Beard held regular classes of cooking. This gave lesson to individuals desiring to know more than regarding the cooking profession. The appearance of cooking lessons in the television brought a lot of changes to the cooking profession. Individuals desiring to become cooks became inspired since one was not required to pay anything in order to learn how to prepare and cook sundry(a) cuisines all that a person required was comprehend to cooking lessons on the television and then applying the learnt lessons practically. more people did not understand how to prepare authorized recipes not until there were free classes on televisions. In the 1800s, people had the mentality that cooking was meant for women and participation of men in the cooking became deemed as a failure of mans responsibility. However, in the early 1900s, people commenced appreciating the art of cooking with the emergence of industries. The emergence of businesses such as tourist hotels made cooking become a vast profession that could hold almost all individuals regardless whether one was a female or male (Mondschein 49). This exceedingly gave the culinary arts a bit of professionalism, although not to a vast deal. Later, in 1946, the Culinary Institute of America became established. The establishment of the Culinary Institute of America brought changes in the professionalism of cooking. Since the institute is non-profit organization, it was suitable of supporting professionalism in cooking without the objective of do a profit. This made most individuals join th e cooking professionalism. Unlike the earlier days, most men conjugate the cooking profession. The college still offers professional education in cooking. Training materials, videos and books from the college have been used to train professionals and non-professionals in cooking.Cooking techniques have changed over time, due to interaction amidst various individuals.
